In a tragic incident in Rivers State, an Inspector in the state’s Police Command reportedly committed suicide after accidentally shooting his colleague. The incident occurred in Nyogor-Lueku, Khana Local Government Area of the state.
The police operative, identified as Inspector Nelson Abuante, and his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana, were both attached to the Taabaa Division of the Police Command. They had gone to arrest a suspect in the community based on a complaint from the suspect’s mother.
Trouble ensued when the suspect, identified as Akere Akpobari, resisted the attempt to arrest him, leading to a confrontation. During the struggle, Inspector Abuante accidentally shot Inspector Gbaramana.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Inspector Gbaramana sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, the situation worsened when the vehicle transporting them ran out of petrol, resulting in Gbaramana’s death.
Upon realizing the gravity of the situation, Inspector Abuante reportedly turned the gun on himself, committing suicide.
The police spokesperson in Rivers, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating that “both bodies have been deposited at the mortuary while investigations are ongoing.” The tragic events highlight the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty, with this incident particularly underscored by the accidental nature of the shooting and its devastating consequences.
