In a puzzling turn of events, the purported suicide of Toluige Olokoobi Babalola, popularly known for the viral ‘Mummy Be Calming Down’ video, has sparked controversy as conflicting accounts emerge from her husband and neighbours. The Edo State Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Toluige and her son gained internet fame in 2020 when a video surfaced showing the young boy on his knees, tearfully pleading with his mother to “calm down and rest a little” after he had apparently offended her. However, recent reports of Toluige’s alleged suicide in Benin, Edo State, have raised questions.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, the husband, Mr Lawal, reported the incident to the Evbuotubu Division in Benin City on November 8, 2023. Lawal claimed that upon returning from the market, he found his two-year-old son crying and discovered his wife hanging by a rope tied to the ceiling. He immediately sought help from neighbours, who accompanied him to the hospital where Toluige was confirmed dead.
Nwabuzor revealed discrepancies in the accounts, stating, “The husband said the neighbours came upon his outcry and helped him to lose the woman. The neighbours are saying, ‘No! We did not know anything about loosing the woman’; that when he shouted, we came and met him lying on top of the woman.”
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State, CP Muhammed Adamu Dankwara, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. Despite the absence of visible marks of violence on the deceased, the commissioner directed the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further scrutiny.
Nwabuzor emphasized the complexity of the situation, stating, “There are issues alleged, and there are so many sides of the coin.” The investigation aims to shed light on the conflicting narratives and determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
