Indications have surfaced that President Bola Tinubu is displeased with the delay in forming the new Minimum Wage Committee. The current minimum wage of N30,000 is set to expire in March, with expectations for a new living wage to be implemented by the first week of April.
Although the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, mentioned that the labor side has already constituted its committee to engage with the federal government team, the government is yet to establish its team for the minimum wage review. The responsibility for setting up the committee lies with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Sources from the presidency revealed that President Tinubu expressed his dissatisfaction during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, emphasizing the urgency of constituting the new Minimum Wage Committee. The source assured that the committee would be in place within one week.
When asked about the likelihood of meeting the April commencement date for the new minimum wage, the source affirmed that the government is committed to the timeline. They highlighted efforts being made to foster a harmonious relationship between the government and labor.
Addressing concerns raised by labor about the government not fulfilling promises, the source expressed optimism about a new level of cooperation. They assured that the government would work closely with labor and all relevant stakeholders to ensure alignment and collaboration for the benefit of the working class.
