The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) has reprimanded the petitioners challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 election, asserting that they failed to present sufficient evidence to support their claims.
Multiple parties, including the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Labour Party (LP), along with their respective candidates, contested former Lagos State governor Tinubu’s election victory. They sought the nullification of his win through legal action.
However, during the delivery of the judgement that upheld Tinubu’s election victory, Justice Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf, a member of the five-person panel, chastised the petitioners for their inability to substantiate their cases.
She remarked, “The petitioners did not grasp the explanation provided by the first respondent or were perhaps solely fixated on their belief in winning the election without presenting any substantial and credible evidence. They neglected to present such convincing evidence before this court.”
Justice Bolaji-Yusuf further questioned whether the petitioners expected the court to collect evidence from the streets or markets, or whether they believed that the court could be swayed or intimidated by threats on social media. She emphasized that this was not how the court operated.
