In a recent interview, Mr. Ono Akpe, the Director General of the Prosperity Cup project, discussed the numerous benefits and the inspiration behind the big grassroots football tournament held in Bayelsa State. The tournament aims to positively engage youths through sports, develop football talents at the community level, promote youth empowerment, and enhance overall grassroots development.
Mr. Akpe highlighted the overwhelming support received from various organizations and media outlets. He mentioned SWAN as members of their LOC who have shown tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm for the game. Additionally, media giants such as AIT, Arisetv, Channels TV, and Brilla FM have provided exciting media support. This year, the tournament has also secured Super Sports (DSTV) and an international media group as media partners.
The Prosperity Cup project was conceived in 2014, and the first edition kicked off in 2015 with 110 community teams from clubs, religious bodies, and tertiary institutions. Since then, the tournament has grown exponentially, attracting teams from various localities and communities in Bayelsa State.
To mobilize funds for the event, the Bayelsa State Government has been a significant supporter, led by Governor Douye Diri, who has been passionate about youth development and sports in the state. Other sponsors, such as Linkage Insurance company and Sterling Bank, have also provided crucial support. However, Mr. Akpe expressed hope for more involvement from oil companies operating in Bayelsa, highlighting their responsibility in supporting grassroots initiatives.
The Prosperity Cup has not only gained recognition within Nigeria but also caught the attention of international scouts from Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. The last edition witnessed scouts from prominent football clubs and academies looking to pick talented players for further training and opportunities abroad.
This year, the organizers are looking to introduce a female tournament segment to provide opportunities for talented female footballers as well. The tournament will also include a refresher course for referees and match commissioners by FIFA-accredited officials to ensure fair and transparent officiating.
The Prosperity Cup has become a platform for young footballers aged 14 to 21 to showcase their talents and gain exposure to local and international scouts. Despite challenges in accessing remote communities, the tournament has managed to engage young talents from various nooks and crannies of Bayelsa.
The Prosperity Cup has made significant strides in promoting youth engagement, community development, and talent growth in Bayelsa State, turning the region into a mecca of football for Nigerian youths and garnering recognition from national and international stakeholders.
