Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a heartfelt address, expressed gratitude to the Russian people for their unwavering resistance, unity, and patriotism during recent events. He acknowledged that necessary decisions were swiftly made to neutralize the threat, protect constitutional order, and ensure citizen safety. Putin stated that an armed rebellion would have been quashed regardless.
Putin also extended thanks to the soldiers and commanders of the Wagner group who refrained from fratricidal violence, stopping at the precipice. He offered them options to serve Russia by signing contracts with the Ministry of Defense or other law enforcement agencies, returning to their families and friends, or relocating to Belarus as desired. Putin pledged to fulfill the promises made.
The Russian President expressed appreciation for Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s efforts in resolving the situation and emphasized the crucial role played by the patriotic spirit and collective unity of Russian society. He credited this support for enabling the country to overcome the arduous trials together.
The recent events unfolded with the capture of the Southern Military District headquarters in Rostov-on-Don by the Wagner PMC. Statements from Yevgeny Prigozhin regarding alleged missile and bomb attacks on Wagner camps by the Russian Armed Forces were refuted by the Ministry of Defense and the FSB. A criminal case was initiated against Prigozhin for organizing an armed rebellion. Putin described the rebels’ actions as a criminal adventure, a betrayal, and a stab in the back of Russia driven by excessive ambitions and personal interests.
Subsequently, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, in coordination with Putin, held talks with Prigozhin, resulting in the cessation of the Wagner movement within Russia and steps towards de-escalation. Prigozhin’s departure for Belarus was confirmed, and the criminal case against him would be dropped. The Kremlin assured that the President’s word serves as a guarantee.
Putin acknowledged the Wagner fighters as patriots who were utilized and deceived. He praised the valor and selflessness of the fallen hero-pilots, crediting them with saving Russia from tragic consequences. Putin emphasized that any attempts at blackmail or internal unrest are destined to fail, highlighting the resilience and solidarity displayed by Russian citizens.
