Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has made an appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for the healing of the country. The governor expressed this appeal during the first security council meeting at the Government House in Enugu, where decisions were discussed and reached in collaboration with heads of various security agencies.
Governor Mbah called on President Tinubu, who was recently sworn in as the President, to proactively work towards the release of Nnamdi Kanu. He believes that Kanu’s release would contribute to the healing process that Nigeria currently needs and would demonstrate a gesture of unity and goodwill towards the Igbo people.
The governor also addressed the issue of the sit-at-home protests organized by IPOB, emphasizing that such actions are detrimental to the economic interests of the state. He declared that the sit-at-home should cease from June 6 onwards. Additionally, Governor Mbah expressed his government’s willingness to engage in dialogue with individuals who have genuine grievances, as a means to achieve lasting peace and security in Enugu State.
During the meeting, Governor Mbah highlighted his commitment to delivering on the promises he made to the people of Enugu State. He mentioned signing three Executive Orders, including one for the removal of unauthorized street barriers within 100 days. The governor emphasized the importance of a vibrant commercial environment for the growth of the private sector and the need to eradicate restrictions on commerce. He stated that the perception of Enugu State as unproductive should be changed to attract private sector practitioners and investors.
To reinforce this, the governor announced that starting from June 6, 2023, there will be no observance of any sit-at-home in Enugu State. The government is determined to enforce this decision using its full authority and resources.
