Residents of Emelego, Ogboloma, and Okolomade communities in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State have been forced to flee their homes due to heightened security concerns after gunmen killed two military personnel in the area.
Nicholas Gilbert, Chief of the Adada community, expressed the residents’ fear and anxiety, noting that the recent attack by gunmen has led to widespread panic and displacement. He informed journalists that the community members have sought refuge on their farmlands, braving harsh weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, without proper shelter.
The prevailing insecurity has forced the community to take drastic measures to ensure their safety, as they fear possible harassment or invasion by security agencies. Gilbert highlighted the lack of a visible security presence and police station in the area for over two decades, which has contributed to the ongoing cycle of kidnappings and killings.
The Chief narrated a series of unfortunate incidents dating back to 2008, detailing instances of violence and crime in the area. He expressed frustration over the lack of effective response from authorities despite his efforts to report the incidents to the police station in Abua.
The situation has escalated further with rumors of impending threats, including the burning of the community and mass arrests. The community members are currently living in a state of uncertainty and desperation as they navigate the challenges of their makeshift shelters in the bush.
Gilbert urgently called upon the state government to intervene and restore a sense of security and stability to the affected communities. He emphasized the need for both military intervention to investigate the recent attack and the establishment of a consistent security presence in the area to prevent further incidents.
