Amidst a developing crisis in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has denied committing any offense that would justify impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly. The governor made this statement while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex.
Governor Fubara assured the people of Rivers State that he remains committed to delivering the benefits of democracy to them. He pledged to address the matter at the appropriate time.
The crisis in the Rivers Assembly unfolded with the removal of its leader, Edison Ehie, and rumors of an impending impeachment procedure against Governor Fubara. The House members, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, served an impeachment notice on the governor, which led to a chaotic scene, including the use of tear gas outside the Assembly Complex.
The situation became further complicated when a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on the preceding night, although it is unclear whether it is directly related to the ongoing political tensions. Rumors have suggested a rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister.
