The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, witnessed changes in its leadership during the 85th legislative sitting. Hon Major Jack, representing Akuku Toru Constituency 1, was elected as the new Majority Leader, and Hon Frankline Nwabochi, representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency 1, assumed the role of House Whip.
The new principal officers immediately took their oath of office after being voted in by the assembly members present. Speaker Amaewhule congratulated the newly elected leaders and charged them to be dedicated to their new responsibilities.
In addition to the leadership changes, the assembly introduced a Bill seeking to amend the Rivers State Local Government Law, No. 5 of 2018. This legislative move was part of the day’s proceedings, indicating ongoing efforts to address and modify existing laws.
Furthermore, the assembly members engaged in discussions related to the Rivers State House of Assembly Funds Management (Financial Autonomy) Bill, 2023. Speaker Amaewhule highlighted the significance of the bill, expressing confidence that when passed, the Governor would give his assent.
Despite challenges, including the withholding of funds for November 2023, the Speaker affirmed the assembly’s commitment to fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities. The Financial Autonomy Bill was referred to the House Committee on Public Accounts for public hearing and further legislative scrutiny.
Speaker Amaewhule expressed gratitude for the vote of confidence passed by the 27 members of the House and reiterated his dedication to serving both the House and the state.
