Russia has issued a warning against military intervention in Niger, cautioning that such action would lead to a “protracted confrontation” and destabilize the Sahel region. The warning comes after the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) announced plans to assemble a standby force in response to the recent coup in Niger.
While Russia does not formally support the coup in Niger, the United States has indicated that its Wagner mercenary group is taking advantage of the country’s instability. The US backs efforts to restore the deposed leader, Mohamed Bazoum.
Supporters of the coup, some waving Russian flags, protested at a French military base near the capital, Niamey. Both France and the US operate military bases in Niger, which have been used for operations against jihadist groups in the wider region.
Ecowas has stated that it remains open to finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Niger, but Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu emphasized that “no option is taken off the table, including the use of force as a last resort.” The US has called on the junta to step aside and allow the restoration of Niger’s democratic constitution.
As of now, the Niger junta has not responded to the latest statements from Ecowas leaders. The situation in Niger remains complex and tense, with the possibility of military intervention still being considered by regional and international actors.
