Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria and other African countries. He assured leaders in the continent that Russia is ready to partner with African states to develop various sectors, including energy, Information Communication, education, and health.
The promise came after Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima announced that Nigeria would collaborate with Russia to revive the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria. Shettima engaged with key stakeholders in the industry during the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum held at the Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The summit witnessed the participation of several African heads of state, with Nigeria’s Shettima representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Nigerian delegations, including ambassadors and officials from various ministries, also attended the event.
During a meeting with the management of Russian Aluminium Company, UC RUSAL, and other stakeholders, Shettima emphasized the urgency of reviving the plant for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
In his opening remarks, President Putin highlighted the untapped potential for trade and economic cooperation between Russia and African countries, citing the $18 billion trade turnover in 2022 as a starting point.
Putin reiterated Russia’s commitment to food security in Africa and beyond, expressing the country’s dedication to shaping a more equitable global food distribution system. He recognized Africa’s vast potential, accounting for 65 percent of the world’s arable land and around 10 percent of renewable freshwater sources, which provides a significant opportunity for agricultural development.
The Russian President pledged increased support to Nigeria and other African states in tackling the food crisis currently affecting the continent. As both Nigeria and Russia seek to strengthen their ties, the promise of collaboration holds significant potential for mutual growth and development.
