In a surprising turn of events, Elisha Abbo, the recently sacked Senator representing Adamawa North, has implicated Senate President Godswill Akpabio in the Court of Appeal ruling that led to his removal from office. The Court of Appeal in Abuja nullified Abbo’s election victory and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a Certificate of Return to his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Amos Yohanna.
Abbo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed that five senators, including himself, who opposed Akpabio’s emergence as Senate President, were being systematically targeted for removal from the Senate through court rulings. He specifically mentioned Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC Abia North) as the next individual in line for removal.
Expressing his disbelief in the court’s decision, Abbo questioned how the court could overturn his victory, which he claimed had over 11,000 votes more than his closest rival, Yohanna Amos Yohanna. He described the judgment as “strange” and called on the judiciary to remain the last hope of the common man.
Abbo reassured his supporters to remain calm and announced his intention to recontest in 2027. Meanwhile, efforts to obtain a reaction from Akpabio regarding the allegations made by Abbo were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The situation highlights the complexity and political tensions surrounding electoral disputes and their aftermath in the Nigerian political landscape.
