Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson has revealed in her book, “I am not Yvonne Nelson,” that she had an abortion in 2010 after a brief relationship with rapper Sarkodie. The confirmation came during the book launch event held at Peduase Lodge in Ghana on Sunday.
In a chapter titled “A Heart-Wrenching Decision,” Nelson narrated the incident on pages 88-95, sharing her emotional journey and the circumstances surrounding her decision. She wrote about going for a pregnancy test with her friend Karen, and the test confirmed her suspicions.
Nelson expressed her feelings at that moment, stating, “It was a grim piece of information that was capable of turning my world upside down.” She also mentioned contacting Sarkodie, whose real name is Michael Owusu Addo, to inform him of the situation.
Describing their relationship, Nelson explained that it wasn’t a serious commitment but rather a connection based on their shared interest in music. Sarkodie was an aspiring musician at the time, and Nelson admired his talent.
In her book, Nelson discussed her attempt to terminate the pregnancy by taking concoctions provided by a colleague. However, the substance did not work, as subsequent tests revealed that she was still pregnant.
When Nelson approached Sarkodie about the pregnancy, he declined to take responsibility, citing his uncertain future and his dependency on his mother. This response deeply affected Nelson, considering her own experiences growing up without a father figure.
Reflecting on her decision to proceed with the abortion, Nelson acknowledged the fear of subjecting a child to a similar fate and the desire to spare them from potential hardships. She recounted successfully aborting the pregnancy but expressed regret, stating that it remains one of the most significant mistakes of her life.
Nelson concluded her narrative by expressing that if given the chance to go back in time, she would have chosen to keep the pregnancy.
The revelation of Yvonne Nelson’s abortion and her candid account of the experience have generated significant discussions both within and outside Ghana’s entertainment industry. Many people have expressed empathy for her emotional journey while highlighting the importance of open discussions about reproductive health and responsible decision-making.
