The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has raised an alarm over an alleged plot by suspected arsonists to burn down the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Lokoja, Kogi State. The party, through its Campaign Council, issued a statement notifying security agencies, the media, and the general public about the purported plot.
The statement, titled “The Plot to Burn Down INEC Office in Lokoja Exposed,” urged security agents to enhance security around the INEC office in Lokoja. The SDP alleged that the arsonists intended to burn down the building housing sensitive materials used in the recently concluded gubernatorial election, with the aim of destroying evidence of rigging.
The SDP’s Director General, New Media, MuriSam Campaign Council, Isaiah Davies, called on security agencies to investigate the alleged plot and hold Governor Yahaya Bello responsible if anything happened to the sensitive materials.
In response, the Kogi State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council dismissed the SDP’s claims as a false alarm. The APC accused the SDP of attempting to cover up its own sinister motive to burn down the INEC office. The statement, signed by the Director of Media and Publicity/Spokesperson for the APC Council, Kingsley Fanwo, described the SDP’s allegations as baseless, senseless, and unsubstantiated.
The APC called on security agencies to fortify security around INEC offices across the state and commended the people of Kogi for participating in a credible, free, and fair election. The APC accused the SDP of failing to win the election, steal ballot boxes, or disunite the state and its people, describing the SDP’s legal challenge as futile.
