The 9th Senate led by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has commenced the debate on a bill for an act to provide for the rotation of power between the six geopolitical zones of the country.
There had been major pleas and calls by Nigerians for power to be rotated among the geopolitical zones in the country as a means to promote unity.
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, prominent persons, elder statesmen, politicians and several others have called for the presidency to be zoned to the South-East.
The call for power to be zoned to the South-East was emphasised by Nigerians who noted that the North, South-West and South-South had ruled the country.
The bill calling for power to be rotated which passed the first reading earlier this year is sponsored by the lawmaker representing Benue South senatorial district, Abba Moro.
The bill has generated controversy but some believe it will bring about unity and a sense of belonging for ethnic minorities.
Others believe the bill will go against the Constitution of Nigeria.
