Reports have emerged indicating that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has decided to retract his support for Senator Godswill Akpabio’s bid for the Senate presidency in the upcoming 10th National Assembly.
Initially, the All Progressives Congress (APC) had endorsed Senator Akpabio, along with three other candidates, for key positions in the National Assembly. However, this announcement stirred dissatisfaction among certain party members, leading to protests and condemnation.
In response to the growing discontent, senators, particularly from the South West region, are reportedly planning to convene a meeting to reconsider their stance on the selection of the Senate’s leadership. The purpose of this gathering is to share the outcomes of a crucial meeting among prominent senators-elect, which will be attended by some of their colleagues.
According to sources cited by Vanguard, it is believed that Tinubu has withdrawn his support for Senator Akpabio based on the advice of his political allies. It appears that Tinubu, who is committed to leading a government free from corruption, emphasized in his inaugural speech the importance of effective and efficient anti-corruption agencies.
A senator who spoke on the matter stated, “Many of us have come to the realization that President Bola Tinubu will not, under any circumstances, support a senator with numerous corruption cases pending in the anti-graft agencies.”
