In response to the tragic Christmas attacks that resulted in the deaths of nearly 200 people in several communities in Plateau State, the Senate has issued summonses to the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and key service chiefs. Among those summoned are Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, and Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi.
The decision to summon these officials was made during a plenary session on Saturday, following a motion raised by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and seconded by Senator Sumaila Kawu. Senator Oshiomhole emphasized the anger among Nigerians regarding the attacks and stressed the need for the security chiefs to provide explanations on why there was a lack of adequate intelligence leading up to the tragic events.
The summoning of the National Security Adviser and the service chiefs reflects the Senate’s commitment to holding a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the Christmas attacks. Nigerians are eager to understand the lapses in intelligence that may have contributed to the devastating loss of lives and property during the incidents. The summoned officials are expected to appear before the Senate to provide detailed explanations and insights into the events leading up to the attacks and the measures being taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
