In a decisive move, the Senate has declared its intent to dismiss and potentially incarcerate Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, along with other high-ranking executives of petroleum subsidiaries. The upper legislative chamber’s stern warning is specifically aimed at executives involved in the Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) projects of the country’s refineries.
The Senate, in a session on Wednesday, expressed grave concerns over the financial implications of the TAM projects, revealing that an astounding N12 trillion has been expended from 2010 until the present day. Furthermore, the legislative body disclosed documented expenditures totaling over $592 million, €4.8 million, and £3.4 million within the same timeframe for TAM, yet none of the refineries are reported to be operational.
This move by the Senate reflects a deep-seated dissatisfaction with the lack of tangible outcomes from substantial financial investments in the maintenance of the nation’s refineries. The upper legislative chamber is now wielding its authority to hold accountable the key figures at the helm of these projects, signaling a resolute stance on financial transparency and project effectiveness within the country’s vital petroleum sector.
