Senator Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has raised an alarm about the killing of his senior aide, Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, allegedly by soldiers operating at checkpoints around the Ikeja axis of Lagos State. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 5, 2023.
According to Senator Adeola, his aide was stopped at a checkpoint around Ojodu-Berger Area of Lagos while on his way home. He provided all necessary documents for the car he was driving through a call to his wife. Subsequently, his wife called and was informed that soldiers were still checking the vehicle’s papers. Unfortunately, this was the last contact they had with him.
Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni’s body, riddled with bullets, was later discovered close to a military barracks in the Toyota Bus Stop area of Oshodi. Senator Adeola believes that his aide was killed by a syndicate of soldiers operating under the newly deployed Commander of 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment of the Nigerian Army.
In response to the incident, Senator Adeola has called on the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, to ensure that the killers are identified, investigated, and brought to justice. He has also highlighted a pattern of similar incidents involving soldiers mounting late-night checkpoints around Ikeja. The senator’s black Toyota Camry, phones, and other valuables are still missing.
The senator’s statement draws attention to the alleged armed robbery and murder carried out by soldiers at checkpoints, prompting concerns about the safety of civilians and the need for a thorough investigation into the matter.
