Senator Shehu Sani has expressed his concern over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by the Department of State Services (DSS).
During an appearance on a Channels Television program on Thursday, Senator Sani, a former lawmaker, shared his perspective, stating that having experienced a lengthy period of imprisonment himself, he could not support the Federal Government’s decision to keep the separatist leader in custody despite a court order.
He emphasized that in a law-abiding country, the court’s order acquitting Kanu should have been respected.
“As someone who has spent a significant amount of time in prison, there is no way I would support a blatant violation of the constitution and a disregard for fundamental human rights,” Senator Sani remarked.
“A court has issued an order for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, and if we are a country that upholds the rule of law, we should respect that order.”
He further highlighted the issue of separatist agitation in the southeastern part of Nigeria, observing that if one examines the background of these separatist movements, there was a time when they believed in the unity of the country.
Something must have occurred along the way to change their stance,” he concluded.
