Calvin Bassey, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey made his Eredivisie debut for Ajax Amsterdam on Sunday as they registered a 1-0 road win over Sparta Rotterdam at Sparta- Stadion Het Kasteel.
He missed the first two league games played by the Dutch champions in the new season as he was serving a suspension following his dismissal in the Dutch Super Cup vs PSV last month.
Bassey ended a two-year association with Rangers last month by signing a five-year deal with Ajax Amsterdam and the Dutch club will pay a transfer fee of 23 million euros to the Scottish Premiership giants.
Including performance related variables, the fee could increase to 26.5 million euros – a record fee paid for a Nigerian defender and the biggest sale by Rangers in their history.
In his final season as a Rangers player, Bassey helped the club qualify for the final of the Europa League and win the Scottish FA Cup.
Asked whether there’s a big difference playing for Rangers and Ajax Amsterdam., Bassey said to ESPN, via ajax.supporters.nl : “Of course. Ajax is known for tiki-taka football.
“You then get to the ball at completely different positions on the field. It’s still getting used to for me and learning to understand my fellow players.”
Bassey, whose preferred position on the pitch is left-back, was deployed as a central defender in ninety minutes of action against Sparta Rotterdam.
