In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court has re-affirmed Sheriff Oborevwori of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected Governor of Delta State in the March 18th Governorship poll. The Apex Court’s decision upholds the earlier declarations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the tribunal, and the Appeal Court.
Sheriff Oborevwori was declared the winner by INEC with 360,234 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 240,229 votes. Both the tribunal and the Appeal Court had previously dismissed the petitions challenging Oborevwori’s victory.
Justice Inyang John Okoro JSC, in delivering the Supreme Court’s decision, upheld the concurrent decisions of the lower courts, stating that the appeal and petition brought by the APC and Ovie Omo-Agege were unmeritorious. The Apex Court emphasized that the appellant failed to prove the case of over-voting and noncompliance with electoral laws.
Additionally, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal brought by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidate, Kenneth Gbagi, on similar grounds. The rulings reiterate the validity of Sheriff Oborevwori’s election as the Governor of Delta State.
