President Bola Tinubu has bestowed national honors upon all members of the Super Eagles squad that clinched the silver medal at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire. In recognition of their achievement at the just-concluded tournament, each player has been granted a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as well as a flat.
Despite Nigeria’s disappointment in losing 2-1 to Cote d’Ivoire in the AFCON final, Tinubu celebrated the team’s performance and resilience. William Troost-Ekong’s powerful header secured an early lead for the Eagles, but second-half goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller sealed the victory for the Ivorians.
During a reception at the presidential villa in Abuja, Tinubu personally honored each member of the silver medal-winning squad with the Member of the Order of Niger (MON). He commended the team for their sportsmanship and unwavering spirit, acknowledging their role in uplifting the nation’s morale through their performance at AFCON.
Following Tinubu’s tribute, Nyesome Wike, the Minister of FCT, facilitated the distribution of forms to the team members. These forms allow them to claim their well-deserved rewards of land and apartments, symbolizing the nation’s gratitude for their dedication and achievements on the football field.
