President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to uphold the highest standards of transparency and integrity in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The President gave the charge on Thursday during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following the official end of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure as INEC Chairman.
Tinubu emphasized that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on the integrity of its electoral system, calling on Amupitan to ensure that citizens continue to have confidence in the nation’s elections.
“For democracy to thrive, our electoral institutions must remain impartial, accountable, and above reproach,” Tinubu said. “No system is perfect, but it is our duty to strengthen the process and build trust in the choices of the Nigerian people.”
He expressed confidence that Amupitan’s experience and academic background would help him steer the Commission toward greater efficiency and transparency, especially ahead of upcoming elections.
Amupitan, a law professor and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, officially assumes office as the new head of INEC. His appointment, confirmed by the Senate earlier this month, marks the beginning of what many observers see as a crucial phase for Nigeria’s democratic consolidation.
