President Bola Tinubu, addressing attendees at the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association on Sunday in Abuja, has issued a stern warning about Nigeria’s current debt situation. He stressed that the country cannot sustainably service its debt with a staggering 90 percent of its revenue, highlighting that this trajectory could lead the nation towards catastrophic destruction.
In his impassioned address, Tinubu asserted the necessity of implementing difficult but crucial changes to uplift the nation. He emphasized, “To build a great nation, we must make bold decisions; even though it may be painful at the moment, it is not about you and me. It is about our generation yet unborn.”
Citing the pressing issue of insufficient electricity supply, the President expressed his deep concern. He labeled the lack of adequate power for Nigerian homes and industries as shameful and unacceptable, recognizing the essential role of uninterrupted electricity in combating poverty. Tinubu pledged that his administration would prioritize generating and distributing sufficient electricity to drive the economy forward.
Moreover, President Tinubu underlined the significance of fair compensation for judicial officers as a cornerstone of comprehensive justice reform. He stated that genuine justice reform must commence with providing world-class salaries and benefits to legal professionals in Nigeria.
The President’s remarks were met with approval from the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau, SAN. He expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to deliver effective governance to Nigeria, citing his impressive track record during his tenure as the governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. Maikyau expressed optimism that Tinubu’s leadership would not only replicate his achievements in Lagos but exceed them for the betterment of the nation.
President Bola Tinubu’s call for bold economic changes, enhanced revenue management, improved power supply, and judicial reform resonates as a crucial roadmap for Nigeria’s sustainable development and international recognition. As the nation stands at a crossroads, the cooperative effort of both public and private sectors will be pivotal in realizing the President’s vision for a prosperous and respected Nigeria.
