The Incorporated Trustees of Mzough U Tiv, representing the Tiv nationalities worldwide, has filed a lawsuit against the Tiv Area Traditional Council (TATC) concerning an alleged cultural practice within the Tiv tribe. The lawsuit revolves around the claim that Tiv men entertain strangers with their wives.
Lead counsel for Mzough U Tiv, Sabastine Hon, explained that the lawsuit aims to determine the accuracy of the allegation that Tiv men give their wives to strangers for pleasure. The matter has been a long-standing issue, and they seek a permanent solution through legal proceedings.
Hon stated that they have gathered witnesses knowledgeable in Tiv tradition and culture and invited anyone with a contrary perspective to present their case.
He emphasized that the lawsuit is not about collective defamation but about seeking a resolution to address the trauma faced by the Tiv tribe. The ultimate goal is to obtain a court declaration that no such custom exists in Tiv land and a permanent injunction against the Tiv Traditional Council.
Counsel for the Tiv Area Traditional Council, Edward Ashiekaa, SAN, refuted the allegations, stating that the Tiv people do not give out their wives to strangers. The council was in the process of addressing the issue when they were served with the lawsuit.
Ashiekaa emphasized that the council is not defending the character of the falsehood but is committed to resolving the matter and ensuring it is not repeated in the future.
The case is now set for a substantive hearing, and both parties are prepared to present their arguments and witnesses.
