In a heartbreaking incident on Tuesday night, over 20 individuals, including four siblings, lost their lives when two wooden boats capsized on the Andoni waterways in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. The boats, en route to Bonny, a neighboring coastal council area, were struck by a heavy wave, leading to the tragic outcome.
Reports indicate that there were over 25 people aboard the two boats when the accident occurred. A rescue team arrived hours later and managed to save some victims, including Mr. Ayayi Promise and his wife, Rose Promise. However, the couple’s four children and a little grandchild tragically drowned in the incident.
Erastus Awortu, the Executive Chairman of Andoni LGA, confirmed the devastating incident in a statement on Wednesday, expressing deep shock and offering condolences to the families and communities affected. He highlighted the council’s immediate efforts to provide assistance to the injured, recover bodies from the river, and support the families of the deceased during this challenging time.
Awortu emphasized the importance of strict compliance with safety measures for boat operators and cautioned against night travels by sea. He acknowledged the need for enhanced safety protocols to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
The statement read, “While we bemoan the boat mishap which came at a time when our people were still basking in the mood of a successful festive season in Andoni, we call on operators of water transportation in Andoni to ensure strict compliance of all passengers to safety rules. We also warn the operators to desist from embarking on night journeys at sea.”
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, efforts are underway to provide support to the survivors and families affected by the boat capsize. The call for increased safety measures aims to prevent similar accidents and protect the lives of those relying on water transportation in the region.
