In a devastating incident that unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, many lives were feared lost as an electric transformer exploded in Gada Biu community, located in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The tragic event, which occurred around 3 a.m., not only claimed lives but also left a trail of destruction, engulfing several residential buildings and shops in its wake.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the transformer explosion triggered a massive fire, resulting in the unfortunate demise of several individuals. The exact death toll remains uncertain as some are believed to be trapped in the flames.
John Silas, a resident of the affected community, recounted the grim details to The PUNCH in Jos on Saturday. Silas lamented, “The people of Kabong village in the Gada Biu community woke up this morning around 3 a.m. to mourn the death of four persons. They were electrocuted due to an electric transformer explosion in the area. I understand that more others were trapped in the fire, and we don’t know their fate now.”
Authorities swiftly responded to the incident, with the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, confirming their awareness. Alfred stated, “Yes, we are aware. Some people also sustained injuries and had been taken to the hospital. So, we have deployed our officers and men to the area to investigate the incident.”
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the electric transformer explosion and the subsequent loss of lives and property.
