In a tragic incident that unfolded on Tuesday, residents of Santos, a suburb community in Lagos, were left in distress following the death of an unidentified woman who was reportedly crushed by a reckless truck in the Abule-Egba Area of Lagos.
The unfortunate event occurred as a police team sought to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles in the area. According to Benjamin Hundeyin, a Superintendent of Police and the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, the police officers, faced with a gathering of motorcycle riders, used teargas to disperse the crowd to prevent potential harm to both officers and riders.
In the chaos that ensued, a passenger in a tricycle panicked upon witnessing the deployment of teargas and jumped out of the vehicle. Tragically, an oncoming Leyland tipper, identified by registration number AAB 376 CB, was being driven recklessly and ran over the woman who had exited the tricycle.
The driver of the tipper fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind. Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that the police have established contact with the family of the deceased, and a comprehensive investigation into the incident has been initiated.
The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer expressed the necessity of using teargas to disperse the crowd, emphasizing that it was a measure taken to preserve the lives of the officers and prevent casualties among the riders. As the investigation unfolds, the focus will be on uncovering the circumstances surrounding the reckless driving that led to this tragic accident in Abule-Egba.
