The family of Mrs. Anesther Egede alleges medical malpractice leading to her death after surgery at Eku Baptist General Hospital in Delta State. According to SaharaReporters, the family claims that doctors left a “huge cotton wool” in her abdomen during an appendectomy, causing complications that ultimately led to her demise on May 22, 2023.
The medical team, led by Dr. Emmanuel Ebom and assisted by Dr. Chianugor Uche and Dr. Emeka, is accused of negligence. The family’s petition, titled “Re: Alleged Gruesome Murder Of Mrs. Egede Anesther By Your Hospital,” demands justice and has been addressed to various authorities, including the hospital’s Zonal Managing Director, the Delta State Governor, Inspector General of Police, and others.
The petition outlines the timeline of events, starting from Mrs. Egede’s admission to Catholic Hospital Obiaruku for an appendicitis scan. It alleges that despite the initial diagnosis and surgery at Eku Baptist General Hospital, the patient’s condition worsened due to the purported negligence of the medical team.
The family claims that an MRI scan conducted at Lily Hospital in Benin City revealed the presence of a large cotton wool left in Mrs. Egede’s abdomen after the surgery. Subsequently, the hospital’s MD, Dr. (Mrs.) Etaghena Harietta, allegedly requested the patient’s return for corrective surgery at no additional cost.
However, the family asserts that the second surgery, conducted by the same team, resulted in further complications, and Mrs. Egede passed away on May 22, 2023. The family accuses the hospital of refusing to release the patient for treatment elsewhere and issuing threats to the deceased’s husband, Mr. Godson Egede.
In response to the allegations, Dr. Ebom, the leader of the medical team, denied the claims, stating that the patient did not die in their hospital. Dr. Chianugor Uche, another member of the medical team, expressed confusion about the allegations.
The zonal medical director of Eku Baptist General Hospital, Henrietta Etaoghene, refrained from commenting on the case, citing its involvement in legal proceedings. The tragic incident underscores the broader concerns surrounding medical malpractice and patient safety in healthcare institutions.
