In a disturbing incident that sent shockwaves through an Abia community, unidentified gunmen carried out a brutal attack on members of the police Rapid Response Squad during a routine stop and search operation along Umuode/Isiahia in Osisioma Ngwa local government. During the attack, one police officer was beheaded, and the assailants absconded with his head, leaving the community in a state of panic.
The residents of Umuode community were thrown into turmoil, fearing the possibility of a police invasion following the shocking incident that unfolded at approximately 4 pm.
Reports indicate that other members of the police squad fled the scene, leaving behind their ammunition, as the gunmen escaped with the beheaded policeman’s head, leaving his lifeless body behind.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but it is believed that the gunmen had been tracking the police team, which had been conducting operations in the community recently. It’s worth noting that this police squad was reportedly associated with the Eziama Police Division, raising questions about the legality of their operation in the area, as it falls outside their jurisdiction.
This incident is a grim reminder of the security challenges faced by law enforcement personnel in the region. Just a few months prior, an Assistant Superintendent of Police had been beheaded along East Street in Aba South local government area by unknown gunmen, underscoring the ongoing security concerns in the area.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chinaka, proved unsuccessful as calls to her mobile phone went unanswered. The incident highlights the urgency of addressing security issues and ensuring the safety of both law enforcement officers and the community’s residents.
