In response to the recent removal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as fuel, the University of Ibadan, situated in Oyo State, has announced a temporary adjustment to its staff work schedule. The move comes as a result of the significant increase in fuel pump prices, which has placed considerable economic strain on Nigerians, particularly salary earners who rely on daily commuting.
In a statement released by the institution, signed by G.O. Saliu, Registrar and Secretary to Council, the University Management expressed empathy for the challenges faced by its staff due to the rising cost of transportation and living expenses. To alleviate this burden, the university has decided to implement a rotational three-day workweek for its staff members.
According to the statement, the work schedule adjustment was proposed by the University Management and subsequently approved by the Senate during its meeting on August 3, 2023. Starting from August 14, 2023, staff members will be required to work on-site for three days each week on a rotating basis. The statement clarified that individuals performing essential duties will be exempted from this adjustment.
The University Management assured staff members that the arrangement will be regularly reviewed and adapted as the situation improves. Furthermore, the statement emphasized the importance of commitment, open communication, and cooperation among staff to ensure a smooth workflow during this period. It also encouraged staff members to work from home when necessary to maintain productivity.
The University of Ibadan acknowledges the potential challenges posed by this temporary work schedule adjustment and seeks the understanding and support of its Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, and Units. The implementation of this intervention is intended to provide relief to staff members while taking into account the current economic realities caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.
