The United States Government has announced a ban targeting Ugandan officials, citing human rights abuses and corruption. The Department of State revealed that it is taking steps to impose visa restrictions under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
The Joe Biden administration emphasized that it will continue to evaluate additional actions under this policy. The individuals affected by the ban are accused of being responsible for or complicit in corruption, undermining the democratic process, and abusing human rights, including those of LGBTQI+ persons.
The move comes after Uganda passed the Anti-Homosexuality Act in May 2023, which imposes severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, for individuals who identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, or Asexual.
In addition to the visa ban, the US Department of State has updated its travel guidance to alert American citizens about the risks faced by LGBTQI+ individuals or those perceived to be LGBTQI+ in Uganda.
The United States reassured its “strong support” for the people of Uganda and expressed its commitment to advancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms not only in Uganda but also globally.
