The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been appointed as the Chairman of the African Governors’ Forum of the World Bank, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria. The African Governors’ Forum serves as a vital platform for African finance ministers and central bank governors to engage with the World Bank on matters of mutual interest.
Established in 1963, the African Caucus aims to enhance the collective voice of African Governors within the World Bank. Wale Edun’s appointment as Chairman is historic for Nigeria, marking the first time the country has assumed this role in the last 60 years.
The announcement, shared via the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Federal Ministry of Finance, highlighted the unique opportunity this appointment presents for Nigeria, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
As per the International Monetary Fund’s guiding principles for the caucus, the rotation of the forum’s Chairman is determined alphabetically based on African countries. This rotational system ensures that each country takes its turn leading the group, preventing any one nation from chairing the forum twice before others have had the opportunity.
Wale Edun’s leadership in this role is expected to provide Nigeria with a platform to actively engage with the World Bank on critical issues, contributing to the country’s economic and developmental agenda.
