The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 infections in Benue State, urging residents to take advantage of available vaccines to protect themselves against the virus. Ogechukwu Chigbo, the Surveillance Officer for Benue State, made this announcement during a one-day Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Media Engagement/Orientation meeting on COVID-19 Ramp-up in Makurdi.
Chigbo emphasized that COVID-19 is still prevalent, and individuals should overcome negative rumours about the vaccine and get vaccinated to safeguard themselves. She highlighted the importance of vaccination during this period to prevent outbreaks, noting that the availability of vaccines has contributed to a lower incidence of the virus.
Addressing concerns about vaccine hesitancy, Chigbo stated, “People should come out and get vaccinated because those dying of COVID when the vaccine is available are committing suicide. There is enough vaccine to protect everyone.” She disclosed that Benue State recorded 25 cases of COVID-19 this year, with no fatalities, emphasizing the need for widespread vaccination.
To enhance vaccine uptake, Chigbo mentioned that the global organization has decided to integrate COVID-19 vaccination into routine immunization exercises in the state. This integration aims to address challenges in reaching at least 70% vaccination coverage in Benue and promote a more comprehensive approach to protect the population against COVID-19.
