*Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria – September 1, 2023*
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed the existence of a significant $800 million garnishee order against the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), noting that it is severely affecting the FCTA’s economy.
Although the minister did not provide specific details about the nature of the $800 million garnishee order, he expressed a determination to take decisive actions to rejuvenate the economy. He also warned that individuals whose actions negatively impact the administration would face serious consequences.
Wike emphasized the adverse impact of the garnishee order on the local economy, stating that the sum involved is substantial enough to cover the FCTA’s budget for over ten years.
During a briefing with journalists at the FCTA premises, the minister highlighted the dire situation, describing the economy as in a state of stagnation.
He remarked, “We are coming out to tell the people about what is on the ground, so that they can see what we have seen. I was asking the permanent secretary this morning, ‘how can there be a garnishee order of $800 million against the FCTA? How do you survive it? Who are those responsible for this, to the extent that there are no projects in the territory? Everything has been abandoned?'”
Wike expressed concerns about corruption within the FCTA and emphasized that the current administration was determined to address the challenges and bring about positive change. He reiterated that the President appointed officials to tackle the existing problems and initiate transformative reforms.
The revelation of the substantial garnishee order underscores the economic challenges faced by the Federal Capital Territory and highlights the government’s commitment to addressing them.
