NDLEA Arrests Fleeing Celebrity Drug Kingpin, Dismantles International Cocaine Cartel

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a fleeing Nigerian national described as the arrowhead of an international cocaine cartel, following the interception of a major consignment allegedly moved through a courier logistics company.

The arrest, according to a press statement signed by Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, on August 18, 2026, represents a major breakthrough in its efforts to dismantle transnational drug trafficking networks operating between Nigeria and other countries.

The NDLEA said the suspect had maintained criminal contacts in the United Kingdom, some of whom have also been arrested by British authorities in connection with the same syndicate.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), said the operation demonstrated the agency’s growing capacity to track drug traffickers regardless of the channels they use to move narcotics across international borders.

Marwa linked the latest breakthrough to a series of recent successes recorded against transnational drug networks, including the dismantling of the Switzerland-based Simon Amadi drug cartel, which allegedly laundered millions of dollars in proceeds through dark web marketplaces.

He also cited the takedown of two Nigerian-Mexican methamphetamine syndicates operating clandestine laboratories in forests in Ogun and Oyo states.

“These operations send an unmistakable signal that this Agency’s reach extends into the ports, the forests, the luxury apartments, and the departure lounges alike, and that no sanctuary exists anywhere in Nigeria for those who traffic in poison,” Marwa said.

The NDLEA chief said drug trafficking organisations had recently begun shifting away from seaports and airports, where security scrutiny has intensified, towards courier and logistics companies, which traffickers apparently consider less monitored channels.

He said the latest operation exposed the misconception that courier services could provide safe passage for illicit drugs.

“There is a further, and equally important, significance to this particular success. In recent times, we have observed a deliberate shift by drug trafficking organisations away from the seaports, where scrutiny has intensified, towards courier and logistics companies, which they have wrongly assumed to be a softer, less monitored channel for moving narcotics across international borders,” he stated.

According to Marwa, the operation, from the interception of the consignment through the courier channel to the arrest of the cartel’s Nigerian arrowhead, demonstrated the agency’s ability to identify and apprehend traffickers wherever they operate.

“The dismantling of this cartel, from the interception of the consignment at a courier logistics channel right through to the arrest of its Nigerian arrowhead, is a clear demonstration that this Agency has both the capacity and the capability to fish out traffickers wherever they choose to hide, whether in their mansions, forests, enclaves, ports, or behind the counters of courier companies.

“Let it be understood: there is no alternative route into or out of Nigeria for illicit drugs that this Agency cannot police,” he added.

Marwa described the case as a significant example of international law enforcement cooperation, noting that arrests of members of the syndicate in Nigeria and the United Kingdom were carried out almost simultaneously.

He commended the agency’s international partners and members of the Special Investigation Team, coordinated by the Director of Operations and General Investigation, for their diligence and professionalism in tracking and dismantling the network.

The NDLEA chairman also warned individuals who use wealth, luxury brands and glamorous lifestyles to conceal their involvement in drug trafficking that such personas would not shield them from investigation and arrest.

“To those who believe they can hide behind luxury brands, glamorous lifestyles, and social media personas while trafficking poison into our communities and across our borders, this Agency will find you.

“It does not matter how well-connected, how wealthy, or how far you attempt to run. As this case demonstrates, we will track you to the departure gate if we must,” Marwa warned.

He assured Nigerians that the NDLEA would continue to intensify efforts to protect young people and communities from the consequences of illicit drug trafficking.

Marwa further reaffirmed the agency’s determination to prevent Nigeria from being used as a transit route for narcotics destined for other parts of the world.
